Maybe it is too late to write a review about this drama which aired in 2004. It's been almost 10 years ago. But why do I keep to write it? Because this drama was so DAEBAK!! I decided to re-run watching this drama after followed the recently drama which played by Jo In Sung, That Winter The Wind Blows. Then I remember his role in drama What Happened in Bali (WHIB). I have watched WHIB when the tv local, Indosiar, broadcasted this drama when I was still at junior high school. As a kid who haven't grown up yet, absolutely this drama has no meaning for me. One thing that I remember the most is the tragic ending. And when I keep searching about this drama, I knew that this drama got the best rating in that time. That's why no matter what is it, I must watch this drama again to get the answer why this drama got a good feedback from the audiences.
The beginning-Meet in Bali
Ha Ji Won who plays as Lee Soo Jung, is work as a tour guide in one of travel agent in Bali, Indonesia. She is just a poor orphan who always getting troubles because of her older brother and her surrounding. While Jung Jae Min played by Jo In Sung, the second son of big company in Korea, comes to Bali without announce to meet with his fiancee, Choi Young Joo, played by Park Ye Jin. At first, Young Joo came to Jakarta to find her lover, Kang In Wook (So Ji Sub), who dumped by her because of his unsuitable background. Then they go to Bali to have a vacation together for the last time before Young Joo get married. But everything turns out to be an awkward since Jae Min's appearence. Then they go around Bali with a travel agent, guided by Soo Jung. In here, Jae Min then realized, that Young Joo have a special affair with In Wook. He get mad and wreak his anger to Soo Jung.
All of the coincidences
They all come back to Seoul. When flying to Korea, In Wook and Soo Jung were in the same flight and they sit on the same row. Soo Jung want to start a new life in Korea after being cheated by her boss. While In Wook being transfered to the main office, which absolutely Jae Min's family company. He is even live next door to Soo Jung's place. Jae Min and Soo Jung also being connected after she has no option other than beg a loan to him to pay her brother's debt. All this coincidences ended to In Wook and Jae Min fall for Soo Jung.
The tragic ending-Reunite in Bali
After all, Jae Min ended up for marrying Young Joo after the threat from his father that Soo Jung will be hurt if he dont. They not being able to see each other for a long time. Then the relationship between Soo Jung and In Wook being more intense. Knowing this, Jae Min cant handle with his feeling. He choose to divorce Young Joo and give up on everything he have. But, it is too late. In Wook fraud the company's fund and escape to Bali with Soo Jung. They want to start a new life in their dream place. With full of anger, Jae Min decide to follow them to Bali. He start to search where they will stay. He even order a weapon to kill them. Until he found them in bed and pulling the trigger gun. What a pity, with all of her remnants power, Soo Jung say that she love Jae Min. Feel sorry for what he had done, Jae Min decide to commit suicide with that gun.
My Thoughts
Some people are think that the ending story doesnt make sense. But I think it just the feel from the audience that the ending was so sad and tragic. Please, people who just watch the last episode or even skip few episodes, just watch this drama from the very beginning and follow the story line. So you will feel how pathetic the main leads are.
In the middle of the story, the audience keep asking who will be end up with Soo Jung. Indeed, it wasn't an ordinary drama which all of people can guess the end of the story. From the beginning until the end of the story, we dont know who Soo Jung truly loves. That's why I hate Soo Jung's character the most among the other main leads. How could she being so greedy? She couldnt give up both of Jae Min who gives her all she want and In Wook who always beside her when she's upset. I really couldnt get the point how her expression while with In Wook or Jae Min. At the very first, I bravely judge that she like In Wook the most, indeed. But then I doubt. I know she loves Jae Min's money. But it just to strange why she act like that to Jae Min. She not just loves his money, but she also loves being around him.
Until the scene when Soo Jung said an impressive sentence. " Maybe the only reason I can't give you my heart is because of my pride". That's the point!!! I understand her then. It can be interpreted that she honestly love Jae Min, but she cant, because thats the only way she keep her pride with. But Soo Jung, please, also being attracted with In Wook is just not right.
For In Wook's character, I have no opinion. Everything is just so fine with him. I agree with him to ignore Young Joo after all she done. How could he accept her anymore after being dumbed because of someone else who very rich and being asked to have a secret relationship even after her marriage????? Or being asked to stay by her side with a promise that she will ignore the marriage but again she still couldnt marry him??? Indeed, he choose Soo Jung more than Young Joo.
While Young Joo, I know she cant obey her parents command then choose to dumb In Wook even she loves him so much. But then, why does she must be so possesive both with In Wook and Jae Min? I feel pity for her, because in the end no one who wants her.
And the most pathetic character was Jae Min. Aaaaa uri Jae Min-ah. Being forced by his family to run the company, marrying woman he doesnt even love, and everything. I really know how it feels like. And everytime he's been ignored by Soo Jung was so heartbroken scene. His acting was so good. How he express an anger, how he crying loud, how he was so heartbreak, and all of his acting showed how deep his love to Soo Jung is. But I have no idea how possesive he are. Maybe it's true when he said, "You know this is the only things I can do for you..." That's right, what can he do to express his love other than giving her money?? Poor Jae Min. And also for two times, he found out that the number one dial in Soo Jung's phone was Kang In Wook. It's so irritating. But the most poor thing is that he never know Soo Jung's true feeling until he kill her. Aarrggghhh poor you my baby Jae Min-ah.
Overall this drama was so unpredictable. Whatever the tragic ending was, WHIB cant be easily forget from my mind. I magically can blend with the story and feel that the story was so real.
