Some Swedish Things You Should Know

Been living for 5 months in Sweden, what I have known about Sweden? Well, I will try to figure out through this silly post. Here, I will list several things which typically are "Sweden things".

1. Swedish Fika
Source : theswedishfika.se
Fika is a Swedish word which has a meaning to drink coffee. But, actually fika is being use to describe coffee break activity where people can drink not only coffee but also tea, juice, or something else and not to be forget, absolutely a sweet snack as the compliment. Mostly, the "common package" for Swedish fika is a cup of coffee with kanelbullar. In this fika, people usually spend their time with friends or relatives to have "chit-chat" and I can say that Swedish really love fika so much. They have more than 3 fika times and I also heard in most Swedish company have more than 4 break time which can be used for having fika in their working hours. Even in university, class will always have break time for fika in every hour.

2. Kanelbullar

As I mentioned above as a typical Swedish fika's "common package", kanelbullar is actually a cinnamon roll which become one of a Swedish traditional snack. Even in Sweden, every 4th October is celebrated as kanelbullar day when we can find kanelbullar are baked everywhere. In Stora Torget (central area), Karlstad, kanelbullar were offered for free last time. I know, that maybe we can find cinnamon rolls everywhere all over the world. But, hey, it is Sweden where cinnamon roll absolutely become one of the special snack, and importantly, it is kanelbullar!

3. Swedish Intonation
Well, honestly I dont know why I should put this on the list. However, it should be then, when I know that Swedish have a unique intonation in their way of speaking. Can you imagine how people emphasize the tone with saying it longer then automatically lost it in the last word of the sentence? For instance, when they say "fika" word, it will turn out like "fiiiiika" (the word "ka" will sound shorter with higher tone) Aaaarrrrggh, I even cant find the way to explain it. But promise me, when you meet Swedish and hear the way of their speaking both Swedish or English (if not being contaminated with English accent), you will absolutely notice this one.

4. Köttbullar

Yap, it is a Swedish meatball which quite popular in here. And please do not think about Indonesian meatball which mostly dominate by flour rather than meat in the composition then being served with soup. I will say that Swedish meatball are just like minced meat which being formed as a ball. It will serve with mashed potato and brown sauce. Aaahh, and dont forget that Swedish will also put some strawberry or lingon berry jam as a condiment. For Muslim, please be aware because most of the meatballs are made by the combination of pork and beef. So, be careful :)

5. Equality
Here in Sweden, they believe in the equality between man and woman as well as old and young. All of them are equal. So, it also influence how they live where we can see elderly who do their activity independently. The other impact also happen in the relationship between students and lectures in the university. And the most important for me is the impact on the way of Swedish to flirt and have a love relationship HAHAHA. Yaaappp, in here, you wont find the common way of flirting where the guy being the one who ask contact number, name, even dating. Man and woman are equal, so the guy will tend to let the girl to do this task. Not fun right?

And I am getting tired now, maybe it's time for me to end this silly post. However, there are still many things about Sweden which havent been explained in this post, but I will try to write in another post later on. So, wait for the next interesting post yaaa HAHAHA. Have a nice weekend :)
